NANAIMO,
BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (April 12, 2007) – On April 22nd, the citizens
of Nanaimo will join with the world by celebrating Earth Day. The
event will take place at Maffeo Sutton Park beginning at 11am. Join
various not-for-profit and environmental groups for information
about leading an environmentally friendly lifestyle in Nanaimo. Be
inspired by the great guest speakers, entertained by the musical
guests and other performers, and bring the kids along for face
painting and other activities.
Speakers, including Ian Gartshore, of Energy Solutions for
Vancouver Island, Jean Crowder, MP, Leonard Krog, MLA, Doug Catley
of the Green Party, and Nadine Wiepning of SOLUTIONS: A
Sustainability Network, will be providing information and practical
tips for residents. Local musical groups Mood Swings, Brass
Connections, Holden, and the Owl and the Pussycat will be joined on
the stage by circus performer Willow, and a drum circle. Check out
a Smart Car display presented by Three Point Motors, and hybrid
technology with a Prius from Toyota. Children’s entertainer “Aunti
Bobbi” will be roaming around from 1:00pm to 2:00pm, and there will
be a fun demonstration by Island Farms’ Farmer Vicky and Daisy the
Cow between 2:30pm and 4:00. Get active at the Romper Room climbing
wall between 11:00am and 1:00pm, and have fun while getting informed
at booths presented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Georgia
Strait Alliance, WildPlay Element Parks, Woodgrove Centre, Earth
Masters, the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange, and more!
Kids
can get in on the fun even earlier by entering the Earth Day
colouring contest! For kids age 12 and under, pick up a colouring
sheet at Woodgrove Centre’s Guest Services desk, or at the Nanaimo
Recycling Exchange office. Pick it up at Guest Services and get a
free temporary tattoo! Colour it in any way you like and bring it
with you when you come to Earth Day! Mascot Benny will be picking
winners at 2:00pm.
This event is sponsored in part by Woodgrove Centre, Jean Crowder,
MP, Thrifty Foods, the Nanaimo Green Party Constituency Association,
